What is a Tune-Up?

A vehicle tune-up involves a technician inspecting the engine, checking vehicle performance, and making any needed adjustments.  Most technicians will follow a tune-up checklist that includes the following:

• Visual inspection of the engine including the fuel-system and all its components, including making sure the fuel filter is not dirty.
• Visual inspection of the spark plugs.
• Visual inspection of the PCV valve.
• Perform a spark plug test to make sure they are performing correctly.
• Visual inspect the belt and hoses for cracks, leaks, or fraying.
• Perform an ignition check and adjust the timing if required.
• Visually inspect the engine air filter and cabin air filter to make sure they are not dirty.
• Check the levels of the engine oil and coolant.

We recommend consulting your vehicle owner's manual to determine how often you will need to have a tune-up performed, but it certainly is not going to hurt anything to have your vehicle routinely inspected.

Tune-Up by Mileage

While the interval of when you will need to have your car serviced will vary from vehicle to vehicle, you can generally know by the mileage what services need to be performed.  One of the best ways to remember when to have your vehicle serviced and receive a tune-up is based on its mileage.  Listed below is the mileage and what services should be performed at that mileage:

Every 3000 Miles

• Check all fluids and top off if necessary
• Check tire pressure
• Change engine oil
• Change engine oil filter
• Check air filter and replace if necessary

Every 7500 Miles

• Change wiper blades

Every 15, 000 Miles

• Change fuel filter
• Change cabin filter

Every 30, 000 Miles

• Change transmission fluid
• Change transmission filter
• Perform a cooling system flush
• Change spark plugs
• Change PCV valve
• Perform carbon and fuel injection cleaning

Every 50, 000 Miles

• Change differential fluid
• Change the manual transmission fluid
• Change transfer case fluid
• Change power steering fluid
• Change brake fluid

Every 60,000 Miles

• Change spark plugs
• Change PCV valve
• Change spark plug wires
• Change the timing belt
